Joint replacement Surgery

Joint replacement surgery is removing a damaged joint and putting in a new one. It is done to improve a persons quality of life by relieving pain, improving the amount of movement in the joint and hence the activities a person can do. Examples of a joint replacement are Total Hip joint replacement, Total knee joint replacement, Shoulder joint replacement and Hip resurfacing. The surgery is done by an orthopaedic surgeon. Sometimes it will only be necessary for the surgeon to replace part of the joint to achieve the same benefits, such as with a Hemiarthroplasty or Unicompartmental knee replacement.

Current research shows that pre operative preparation and post operative physiotherapy rehabilitation are very important to achieving good outcomes following your surgery. It is shown to improve the patient experience, reduce anxiety and pain, and speed up your return to normal activities.

EnhancedRecovery provides  Pre-operative physiotherapy service;

This helps you prepare fully for your elective joint replacement surgery. It ensures a better hospital experience, a smoother acute recovery period and an easier discharge experience from hospital to home.

It usually requires 2 or 3 Physiotherapy sessions and involves the following input;

  • Full assessment of your joint and advice on how to maintain or improve your current range of movement and strength for better outcomes post op.
  • Provision of an exercise programme to start pre-operatively to prepare your body and joint for surgery
  • Education on the operation itself and the care you will receive in hospital.
  • Advice on how to prepare your home and support needs, ready for an easy discharge from hospital and ongoing rehabilitation.
  • Assessment for any equipment needs you may have, this is especially relevant for Hip Replacement Surgery or if you live alone.

If you are planning to have Hip Replacement Surgery, your surgeon will ask you to follow certain hip precautions post operatively to avoid dislocation of your new hip. Bed raises, over toilet frames, bath boards and easy reachers are just some of the items you may need for 6 weeks to 3 months to follow these precautions. Contact EnhancedRecovery to discuss your needs in more detail and how equipment could be supplied.

EnhancedRecovery provides a Post-operative physiotherapy service;

From the day you are discharged from hospital we will ensure your recovery goes smoothly giving you peace of mind and the best outcomes possible. With many years of experience in orthopaedics we can provide reassurance when things are going well and act quickly when complications arise.

The number of Physiotherapy sessions required post operatively can vary greatly, but you would usually require 2 per week for the first few weeks then less frequently as your recovery progressed.

EnhancedRecovery can make it easier for you and visit you in your own home initially.

Our post operative care involves the following;

  • An initial home visit within a few days of discharge from hospital to assess how you are doing and check no complications have arisen.
  • A full assessment of the new joint is completed and advice on care of it at home and exercises is given.
  • A contact phone number is given to you to use for any questions you may have on a day to day basis.
  • Physical treatment techniques are used as required e.g massage, taping, cold therapy, PNF
  • Ongoing monitoring for complications.
  • Ongoing progression of the advice, exercises and functional activities as you recover and return to the activities you love.
  • As you progress you can attend our clinic at InShape Studio for ongoing treatment and later progress to use of the Gym Facility and Classes there.
  • Our aim is to work alongside you to help you get back to the activities you love as soon as possible.

Complications such as blood clots (DVT), infection, excessive joint stiffness and swelling can be an unexpected outcome of surgery and having an experienced therapist to monitor your progress gives you peace of mind and the best possible outcomes.

Trauma / Fractures

Fractures or soft tissue injury can occur in any part of the body, and each one has its own recovery rate and care plan to consider when you are rehabilitating. Some common fractures are

  • Fractured Neck of femur (hip bone), Pelvic fracture
  • Femur, Tibial and Ankle fractures
  • Shoulder and wrist fractures
  • Spinal fractures

From the day you are discharged from hospital we will ensure your recovery goes smoothly. Regular therapy input at home or in our clinic, home exercises and advice to follow independently and the reassurance of a contact number if questions arise along the way. We make sure you understand and are able to follow the protocols for recovery set out by your surgeon and will match our treatment techniques to the goals you want to achieve, in the best timeframe possible.

Bodies recover well from trauma and fractures. But for the best outcomes, they need the right rehabilitation.
